TikTok was temporarily blocked for 12 hours in the United States, which had unforeseen effects on the collectible card game Marvel Snap. During this time, access to the game was also interrupted, and although TikTok was quickly reactivated, Marvel Snap took additional time to become available again. The game, developed by Second Dinner and published by Nuverse, a subsidiary of ByteDance (owner of TikTok), found itself in the middle of this controversy.
Marvel Snap, victim of the TikTok ban
Second Dinner announced through its official social media account that “MARVEL SNAP is back online in the U.S.”, adding that they are working to bring more services domestically and partner with a new publisher to avoid future complications. The statement was unusually direct, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding their business relationship with Nuverse and ByteDance.
President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social the possibility of a deal that would grant the United States a 50% stake in TikTok, alluding that this property could be just an extension of the imminent legal bans. If a deal is not finalized, TikTok’s operations could be threatened again, as well as those of the associated services under the Nuverse umbrella.
Although Marvel Snap is now playable, at the time of writing this news, in-app purchases are still not available, although they are expected to return soon. This situation has highlighted the fragility of business relationships in the sector, where a service outage can drag down other associated products and games.
In this context, the video game industry is closely watching the strategic decisions that both Second Dinner and Nuverse will make, pointing to a future that could be fundamentally different if they decide to part ways.
