In a significant shift towards an independent approach to electrification, Mazda has unveiled its revised plans for future vehicles.
During a recent presentation in Tokyo, Mazda executives, including CEO Masahiro Moro, emphasized a strategic move away from partnerships involving major players like Toyota and Changan Automobile, which previously supplied hybrid and electric technologies for models like the CX-50 hybrid and the EZ-6 electric sedan.
According to plans first discussed last November, Mazda aims to introduce an in-house developed hybrid system for the CX-5 crossover and an all-electric SUV based on its own dedicated platform by 2027.
The Skyactiv-Z lineup will launch with a new inline-4 engine
This new platform will accommodate a variety of batteries, reflecting Mazda’s commitment to flexibility in its future electric offerings.
Part of Mazda’s updated strategy includes the introduction of the Skyactiv-Z combustion engine designed to meet stringent global emissions regulations. The automaker plans to use this next-generation engine in its hybrid powertrains while continuing to explore rotary engine technology.
The Skyactiv-Z lineup will launch with a new inline-4 engine, with an inline-6 version anticipated for larger vehicles.
To streamline operations, Mazda expects to cut development investments by 40% and reduce development man-hours by 50% through enhanced collaboration with suppliers. This efficient approach is intended to facilitate the simultaneous production of electric and internal combustion vehicles on the same assembly lines, drastically lowering initial investment costs by as much as 85% compared to establishing new EV assembly plants.
Despite these ambitious plans, Mazda is also taking steps to establish a new battery factory in Japan as part of its broader electric vehicle strategy. With the automotive landscape shifting towards electrification, Mazda’s willingness to forge its path could influence its long-term viability in a competitive market where greater independence may yield innovative advantages.
