Segway recalls 220,000 scooters over serious safety issues

Segway has announced a major recall affecting approximately 220,000 units of its popular Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP electric scooters.

The recall stems from a critical safety issue related to the scooters’ folding mechanism, which has been known to fail unexpectedly during use, leading to concerns over rider safety.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), this malfunction can cause the handlebars or scooter stem to collapse suddenly, significantly increasing the risk of falls and injuries.

The scooters involved in this recall were widely sold in the United States

Reports have indicated that Segway has received 68 complaints related to this folding mechanism, with 20 reported injuries ranging from minor abrasions and bruises to more severe cases of lacerations and broken bones.

The scooters involved in this recall were widely sold in the United States through major retailers such as Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target, and Sam’s Club, as well as online platforms like Amazon and Segway’s own website from January 2020 through February 2025.

The Ninebot Max series has proven especially popular among urban commuters and college students, thanks to its combination of performance, affordability, and portability. With a range exceeding 20 miles per charge, these scooters offer a practical alternative for short to medium commuter distances.

However, the recall raises pressing questions about safety standards and manufacturing quality in the rapidly growing micromobility sector, particularly for lower-priced models.

In response to the situation, Segway is urging consumers to stop using the affected scooters immediately and has offered a free maintenance kit for repairs, which includes tools and instructions for inspecting the folding mechanism. For assistance, customers can contact Segway’s dedicated customer service at 1-800-914-6110.

As the electric scooter market matures, companies may face increased scrutiny to uphold safety standards, underscoring the importance of responsible manufacturing practices in this burgeoning industry.
