The current landscape of video game development in Spain appears bleak, marked by the recent bankruptcy of Tequila Works and the uncertainty affecting other studios. However, the revelation of a new project by MercurySteam offers a ray of hope in a context that many consider grim. This Spanish studio, known for its collaborations with industry giants like Konami and Nintendo, has stood out for iconic titles such as its installments for the Castlevania and Metroid franchises.
MercurySteam decides to venture into the production of its own IPs
MercurySteam has broken away from its trajectory of working on well-known franchises and has decided to venture into developing its own title, titled Project Iron. This announcement comes after several previous failures, including Spacelords, which did not generate the expected impact. Despite this recent history, the studio is confident that this new release will revitalize its reputation and contribute to improving the image of the sector in Spain.
For the moment, few details are known about Project Iron. A teaser published on the game’s social media suggests a focus on medieval fantasy, with an image featuring a hammer on an anvil, complemented by a message encouraging fan participation.
With this new project, MercurySteam seeks to establish itself as a creator of original content, leaving behind the reliance on established franchises that have been its hallmark until now. The gaming community hopes that Project Iron will be a success, which could mark a positive change in the trajectory of video game development in Spain and help dispel the shadows that have recently affected the industry. Although information about the title remains scarce, everyone hopes it will drive growth and sustainability in the sector in the country.
