The Apple Watch Ultra is getting closer to MicroLED technology

A recent rumor from a Weibo account (via MacRumors) called Instant Digital, known for its accurate track record in Apple product leaks, states that the next significant update for the Apple Watch Ultra will involve the implementation of MicroLED display technology.

Although this advancement is not expected to see the light of day until next year with the Apple Watch X, the change is something to be taken very seriously. The reason is that introducing a screen of this caliber into a device with such high production volume like the Apple Watch is a significant consideration.

This information isn’t new, however. Several reports, from display analyst Ross Young to reputable sources like Bloomberg and Nikkei Asia, have corroborated Apple’s intention to adopt microLED technology. What’s interesting is that Apple seems to be looking beyond the watch, with possible plans to bring this technology to other key products such as the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

What does the arrival of microLED mean?

MicroLED, technically known as microscopic light-emitting diode, is a display technology based on tiny individual LEDs for each pixel. Unlike OLED, where each pixel is an organic cell emitting light, in microLED, small inorganic structures are illuminated. This not only allows greater control over the color and brightness of each pixel but also reduces the risk of issues such as burn-in.

MicroLED is a display technology that promises to dramatically improve visual quality in terms of brightness, color reproduction, and viewing angles. Often described as a screen where images appear to be painted on the glass, it offers a level of realism and sharpness that renders previous technologies obsolete.

The potential shift to MicroLED in the Apple Watch Ultra signifies, apart from nearly unattainable image quality, an anticipated increase in battery life. These displays are more energy-efficient, which could lead to longer device battery life.

The adoption of MicroLED in the Apple Watch Ultra, and potentially in other Apple devices, promises to revolutionize how we see and experience content. It not only signifies a leap forward in visual quality but also in the hours we can enjoy it. Undoubtedly, the coming years will be exciting in the field of display technology.
