The new Netflix series, based on the acclaimed Argentine comic El eternauta, written by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and illustrated by Francisco Solano López, has arrived to offer a contemporary adaptation that has generated both anticipation and debate among fans of the original work. Under the direction of Bruno Stagnaro, the series delves into a post-apocalyptic Buenos Aires, where changes in characters and narrative aim to connect with the current reality.
A series much more focused on conflict
Unlike the comic, which is characterized by its melancholic and reflective tone, the series offers a more active and dynamic approach. The main character, Juan Salvo, played by Ricardo Darín, receives a deeper emotional development, moving away from the idealized representation of the comic to present a more complex family background. In fact, the narration omits the voice-over, placing greater emphasis on the performances, which creates a more intense identification with the dilemmas faced by the characters in a chaotic world.
The series draws clear parallels with recent global situations, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a new context to the narrative of an alien invasion. This contemporary approach has been deemed necessary, as adapting the work to a literal vision would have resulted in anachronism. From its first episode, a transformation in tone is evident, with an emphasis on the tensions and conflicts among the survivors, which adds urgency to the story.
Despite some critics arguing that the series does not reach the greatness of the comic, its value lies in Stagnaro’s ability to provide an adaptation that not only respects the original spirit, but also stands on its own, creating an immersive atmosphere that invites viewers to explore a reinvented narrative. Although comparisons are inevitable, this new version presents itself as a relevant complement to the masterpiece by Oesterheld and López.
