General Motors (GM) continues to solidify its commitment to electric vehicle (EV) production in Mexico, having established its electric car manufacturing operations in Ramos Arizpe since last year.
This initiative has not only resulted in the creation of approximately 5,000 new jobs, but it has also produced popular models like the Chevy Equinox EV and Honda’s Prologue, which have achieved significant success in their segments.
Despite ongoing discussions regarding proposed tariffs that could affect the automotive industry, GM has confirmed it has no plans to relocate its EV production from Mexico to the United States.
GM’s Electric Models Achieve Success While Targeting Latin American Markets
Adrián Enciso, the director of GM de México’s EV operations, stated, “At this time, GM has no plans to halt or relocate production of any of our EV models made in Mexico”. He also suggested the possibility of adding more models to the lineup, including the forthcoming 2026 Chevy Spark.
However, the proposed tariffs may impact GM’s production costs significantly, potentially increasing expenses by up to $4,300 per vehicle.
While this hike could affect the company’s profitability, analysts note that GM might still produce these EVs in Mexico and target markets like Canada and Latin America for sales.
This strategic approach aligns with the company’s focus on expanding its customer base beyond U.S. borders, particularly for models aimed at regions like Central and South America.
As GM navigates the complexities of tariffs, labor considerations, and market demands, the automaker seems poised to maintain its growth in the EV sector while leveraging its established infrastructure in Mexico. In an industry marked by uncertainty, GM’s steadfastness in its Mexican operations signals a strong commitment to both its workforce and innovative vehicle production.
