Sometimes the stars align and cause mysterious and unpredictable events, like us getting to play for free the first hours of both the best video game of 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3, and also the worst video game of 2023, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, on PlayStation Plus.

Yes, dear reader, you read that right. Sony has announced that if you’re a subscriber to PlayStation Plus Premium, you now have the opportunity to try out the highest-rated game of 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3, which boasts a 96 out of 100 score on its PC version and is a strong contender for the 2023 Game of the Year award.

On the other hand, PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers will also have the chance to “enjoy” what has been considered the worst video game of 2023, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which has received an average score of 34 out of 100 in specialized reviews. The game based on Tolkien’s popular character has held the lowest rating of the year until just a few weeks ago when Skull Island: Rise of the Kong was released (garnering a 23 out of 100 and taking away that “achievement”).

PlayStation Plus Premium trials allow gameplay for just a few hours for the available titles. In the case of Gollum, the trial lasts one hour, giving you enough time for the tutorial and to get a glimpse of the game’s concepts, whereas Baldur’s Gate 3 offers a two-hour trial, which given the depth of the game, you might not even leave the character editor.

Whichever option you choose, opt for this free trial if you’re curious about both video games. It’s the best way to get a sense of what they offer.
