Stack Overflow, the popular question and answer platform for programmers, announced this week a strategic partnership with OpenAI, the company behind the popular chatbot ChatGPT. The goal of this collaboration is to enhance the development of artificial intelligence by leveraging the vast technical data accumulated by Stack Overflow over more than 15 years.
The alliance implies that OpenAI will use the Stack Overflow API to access its extensive repository of technical questions and answers. This information will be crucial to improve OpenAI’s AI models, especially the one known as GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer), by integrating solutions to real programming problems. A notable feature will be the ability of ChatGPT to attribute the provided answers directly to their original authors on Stack Overflow to “encourage deeper engagement with the content”.
On the other hand, Stack Overflow will internally implement OpenAI models to develop new functionalities, such as OverflowAI, a tool aimed at improving web search and content discovery. This will allow for a more efficient and personalized experience for users by offering relevant information quickly and accurately.

Collaboration is not limited to the implementation of existing technologies, but both companies will work together to continuously improve their systems. OpenAI will benefit from access to Stack Overflow’s immense database to address large-scale programming problems, while Stack Overflow will work on developing innovative tools to enhance the developer experience, while also contributing to their community.
The first integrations resulting from this partnership are expected to be launched by mid-2024. Stack Overflow says that the agreement with OpenAI, which also announced a partnership with Financial Times just a week ago, will allow them to reinvest in long-term community-focused products.
