Redesigned Yahoo! iPhone app integrates Summly

Yahoo! has been on a roll this last week. The company announced a new iPhone weather app, redesigned its tablet mail apps, and discontinued unpopular services. Today the company released an updated Yahoo! news app for the iPhone that integrates Summly, a technology that trims stories down into digestible summaries. Summly was purchased just one month ago for a reported $30 million dollars. The quick integration of Summly into the Yahoo! App for iPhone shows just how invested Yahoo! is in the mobile space.
The new Yahoo! news app looks like a typical news app until you switch on the new “Visual” view. This turns the news feed into a visual experience with summaries of stories where available. Only a handful of stories showed up with summaries, which is disappointing since many news articles will require users to open up the story instead of reading summaries in the news feed.
Along with a visual refresh, the new Yahoo! app also tailors the news feed for you. Select which topics you’re interested in and Yahoo! will sync your choices across all of its services so it remembers what you’re interested in.
The app is out now for the iPhone and iPod Touch for users in the US.
