Angry Birds creators Rovio are invading another genre of games with Angry Birds Epic, a role playing game ‘set in a fantasy version of Piggy Island’. It promises a fleshed out and humorous storyline, turn based combat and a ‘rich system of crafting weapons, armor and potions.’
Angry Birds Epic follows Angry Birds Go in expanding the Angry Bird universe. Like its karting predecessor, Epic will be free to play, with plenty of opportunities for in game purchases. This soft launch – testing the game in a small but developed market – will help Rovio get the freemium balance right, and tweak the gameplay before a worldwide launch in a few weeks. No date has been set so far, so unless you’re in Australia or New Zealand, you’ll have to wait.

From the gameplay trailer, we can see Angry Birds Epic has pretty standard looking RPG turn based combat. Hopefully Rovio can make it original enough to be interesting and accessible. It will be available on iOS first.
Rovio also recently announced a new game for fall, Angry Birds Stella, the first to feature a female (bird) lead character.
