Sam Altman continues to make headlines wherever he goes. The current CEO of OpenAI has published a new post on his personal blog where he talks about the arrival of a “Superintelligence.” Under the title “The Age of Intelligence,” Altman points out that “we might have a superintelligence in a few thousand days; it may take longer, but I am confident we will get there.”
The CEO of the artificial intelligence company believes that within a decade, we could have intelligence that surpasses that of humans. In this regard, Altman points out that the current goal of his company is to create AGI, artificial general intelligence that could match human intelligence. However, superintelligence would go a step further, so that machines would surpass humans in these tasks.
It is not the first time that artificial superintelligence (ASI) is mentioned within this field. Altman has been talking about it since last year through various statements, while one of his former colleagues, Ilya Sutskever, former co-founder and scientist at OpenAI, left the company to start a company with a clear name: Safe Superintelligence.
“If we want to put AI in the hands of as many people as possible, we need to reduce the cost of computing and make this technology ‘abundant’ (which requires a lot of energy and chips),” Altman points out in his blog post. “If we don’t build enough infrastructure, AI will become a very limited resource over which wars will be fought and will primarily become a tool for the rich.”
We will have to wait to see if Altman’s words come true, although for that, it will be necessary to wait many years.
