The artist from Barranquilla does not stop for a second. After the extensive media scrutiny she was subjected to for her breakup with Gerard Piqué (current president of the Kings League), Shakira took the bull by the horns and released one of the most viral songs of 2023 with Bizarrap, Shakira: BZRP Music Sessions #53.

Now, the artist once again took center stage at the first Latin Women in Music gala. The reason? The powerful speech she gave when she won Billboard’s Woman of the Year award.

In front of the Miami crowd, the first thing she did was dedicate a few words to her mother, Nidia del Carmen Ripoll: “Despite the difficulties you have faced this year, you are still standing, with your boundless love and resilience. For me, mommy, you have been the woman of the year“.

The Monotonía singer also took the opportunity to open up and talk about women and self-care: “We are braver than we think and more independent than we were taught to be. What woman hasn’t ever forgotten about herself because she was looking for attention, affection or the approval of others? It has happened to me more than once.

In her speech she stated that “there also comes a time in every woman’s life when she no longer depends on someone else to love or accept herself as she is. There comes a time in a woman’s life when the search for the other is replaced by the search for oneself. There comes a time in a woman’s life when the desire we have to be perfect is replaced by the desire to be authentic“.

She then recited a phrase that has gone viral due to the clear reference to Pique’s infidelity with Clara Chia: “It doesn’t matter so much if someone is faithful or not faithful to you, what really matters is if you remain faithful to yourself“.

Shakira also explains the importance of music and the healing role it played in her hardest time: “It is true that when I felt most lost it was music that put me on the path back to myself. But the most important lessons I learned from other women, and because of them I wrote what I wrote and sang what I sang”.

This was the artist’s first public act after leaving the city of Barcelona for good. In early April, Shakira took off for Miami with her sons, Sasha and Milan.
