Switch 2 revolutionizes its cartridges: Now they will be cards with the download code

The recent presentation of the Nintendo Switch 2 has brought a host of news, among which stands out a new cartridge mode that has generated great anticipation. Unlike traditional cartridges, the new game key cartridges do not contain the full game inside; instead, they serve as a key to download the corresponding video game on the console.

The microSD Express will be more necessary than ever

This innovative system means that, once the cartridge is purchased, players will need to download the game content to their console or to a microSD card, ensuring they have enough storage space. Once the download is complete, it will be necessary to insert the cartridge into the Nintendo Switch 2 to enjoy the game without the need for an Internet connection. However, it is important to highlight that, even when playing offline, the cartridge must remain inserted in the console throughout the entire gaming session.

Among the titles that will implement this new system are Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster and Street Fighter 6, which are already labeled as compatible with this type of cartridges. In addition, the boxes of the games that use key cartridges will include a warning informing consumers about this feature.

The introduction of these cartridge formats not only reflects a change in Nintendo’s distribution strategy but also raises new questions about user experience and storage management on the console. As games become more complex and require more space, the need for additional storage could make Express microSD cards an essential accessory for players of the new console.
