Take-Two sues a company that trades GTA Online accounts

The controversy surrounding the buying and selling practices of accounts and items in GTA Online has escalated, as Take-Two, the company behind the Grand Theft Auto franchise, has filed a lawsuit against PlayerAuctions, a third-party asset marketplace that allows users to trade game accounts and goods. This litigation is based on Take-Two’s claim that PlayerAuctions facilitates the transaction of unauthorized content, including modified player accounts, in-game assets, and virtual currency, all obtained through hacks and cheats.

An act that significantly harms the company and the players

According to Take-Two, this commercialization of hacked accounts not only harms the experience of players but also affects the balance and fairness of the game. The lawsuit states that the use of hacks, glitches, and mods infringes the company’s intellectual property, which could jeopardize the accounts of players participating in these transactions. Furthermore, Take-Two argues that this undermines the sales of its ‘shark cards’, a legitimate method for acquiring in-game money, through which players can buy virtual currency or earn money through missions.

The PlayerAuctions platform offers accounts ranging from $5 to $850, each with attributes that can include hundreds of millions of dollars in-game, businesses, vehicles, and maximized character stats. Take-Two claims that PlayerAuctions makes millions of dollars in revenue by taking a commission from each transaction, thus harming players who invest time and effort in the game.

A critical point in this case is the violation of Take-Two’s code of conduct, as handing over control of a GTA Online account to a third party is not only risky but could also result in penalties for the original player. The long and often arduous gaming experience in GTA Online has led some players to consider these payment options; however, the question arises: if the process is not enjoyable, is it really worth playing?
