Since Game of Thrones ended in 2019, streaming platforms have been actively searching for a replacement for George R.R. Martin’s epic medieval series. Thus, from direct spin-offs like House of the Dragon to somewhat strange imitations in other worlds like The Rings of Power have emerged in an attempt to match the previous work of David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. However, so far, none have reached its level.

This is something that has changed, albeit with reservations, with Shogun. The Disney Plus series has already completed the nine episodes of its first and only season, and it has done so with the certainty that it is one of the few fictions that has lived up to a medieval series like Game of Thrones was in its day.

However, Shogun is much more (and very different) from this series: it is a fiction based on feudal Japan with a classic story based on James Clavell’s 1975 book. In fact, in 1980 there was a miniseries adaptation of the novel, which was a landmark at the time. But, to be honest, the Disney Plus version is on another level.

Political surveys, medieval battles and much more

The success of a series can be measured by various factors: from its intriguing plot to the quality of its performances, passing through historical accuracy and the ability to transport the viewer to another world. In the case of Shogun, all these elements converge to offer a unique experience. I assure you that you have never delved so deeply into feudal Japan as in this series.

The series introduces us to a world of political intrigues, power struggles, and a wide cast of characters fighting to survive in a historical context as complex as it is fascinating. Thus, through visually stunning storytelling and an exciting plot, the series takes us to 17th century Japan in a way that few other series have achieved.

One of the standout features of Shogun is its ability to balance historical accuracy with fictional storytelling. Both the series and the previous novel draw inspiration from real events to construct their plot, but also allow for certain creative liberties to keep the audience engaged. In this way, a unique combination of historical and fictional elements is created to build a rich and authentic world.

In addition, Shogun benefits from a talented cast that brings its characters to life in a unique way. From Cosmo Jarvis as the fearless John Blackthorne to Hiroyuki Sanada as the skilled and calculating Yoshii Toranaga, each actor brings depth and complexity to their respective roles, making the viewer truly invested in the fate of these characters.

But beyond its cast and plot, what really sets Shogun apart is its ability to transport the viewer to another time and place. Through its impressive art direction and meticulous attention to detail, the series masterfully recreates feudal Japan of the 17th century, from its lush landscapes to its majestic palaces and fortresses. Each scene is carefully crafted to capture the essence and atmosphere of the era, immersing the viewer in a world that seems to be taken straight from the pages of history.

However, despite all its virtues, Shogun is not without flaws. The pace, especially in its early episodes, is sometimes slow and sometimes rushed, losing some of the narrative along the way. It’s easy to get lost in Shogun’s plot, and I don’t blame you if you have to go back to a dialogue to catch all its intricacies. Some have even pointed out Cosmo Jarvis as a bad Blackthorne… although I must say I couldn’t disagree more.

However, these minor inconveniences do not in any way overshadow the overall impact of the series, which remains an impressive work as a whole and, for now, the most impactful fiction in 2024. So don’t hesitate: if you want a completely unique experience, Shogun is the best option available for you.
