Netflix is on a very interesting streak when it comes to movies and series, and we are not only talking about the best known ones. While we are all looking forward to seeing the live-action One Piece and we continue to delight in hits like The Squid Game, Stranger Things or You, there are many other fictions that appear on the platform and, despite going somewhat unnoticed, often become great successes.
This last month, this has just happened with a Mexican series: El elegido. Released last August 16, it has become a very interesting global phenomenon, and has been placed in the Top 10 of all kinds of countries where Netflix reaches. But what is The Chosen One about and why, in addition to succeeding, has it angered Christians?
A contemporary Jesus Christ
El Elegido is a six-episode miniseries that focuses on Jodie, a 12-year-old boy who lives in Baja California (Mexico) and who, to his surprise and that of everyone around him, has the same powers that Jesus Christ represents in the Holy Bible: he can turn water into wine, make the crippled walk… and even raise the dead!
Jodie becomes a phenomenon, and the evangelical leaders of his town make him a star and try to get him to use them to save humanity. However, Jodie has only one goal and it’s much more mundane: to impress the girl he likes and stand up to the bullies who bully him. As Jodie comes to terms with her powers and even her destiny, everything spirals out of control around her identity.
The Chosen One is an adaptation of the comic book American Jesus by Mark Millar, which became a great success at the time. However, and as it could not be otherwise, its subject matter has caused much of the Church, especially the Catholic Church, to be against its proliferation. Be that as it may, it seems to be a great series.
