Beyond the Razzie, which are the anti-Oscars par excellence, there are some annual film awards that are clearly in a very different line from those of the Academy: the MTV Movie & TV Awards. Held since 1992, these film awards are the most democratic: they are voted by the general public and through categories that are very different from the usual ones.

That is why series and movies that are not usually considered in the awards, such as comedies and horror, enter fully into the MTV Movie & TV Awards. And in the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards it was the latter genre, horror, that came out on top thanks to two big winners: The Last of Us and Scream VI.

A night marked by the scriptwriters’ strike

As much as they are one of Hollywood’s most anticipated awards, this year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards were marked by the screenwriters’ strike plaguing the industry. At a time when producers come to believe they can write scripts with Artificial Intelligence, writers have decided to halt all activity until their rights are reviewed.

In the case of the MTV Awards, this has resulted in the usual glamour and star-studded party being turned into a pre-recorded ceremony with videos shot from home by the winners. The decision came after Drew Barrymore and Jamie Lee Curtis, actresses who were to present the event, declined to do so hours earlier in support of the strike.

That is why we do not have great moments of the gala, and if the strike continues, the money they could lose California could be huge -in the previous strike it rose to 2 billion dollars-. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that we had some great moments and, above all, great recognitions.

The Last of Us conquers all

If there is a series that has marked 2023, it is undoubtedly The Last of Us. HBO Max‘s adaptation of Naughty Dog’s video game won 3 statuettes: best series, best hero for Pedro Pascal and best duo for the chemistry between Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

These triumphs have not been in vain, and it is that the competition was quite difficult. The Last of Us was fighting against the almighty Stranger Things, against House of the Dragon and against movies that also turned out to be big hits like Top Gun: Maverick and Scream VI. But The Last of Us has surpassed them all.

Scream VI was the big surprise of the night. The film was up against films like Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Smile. However, it managed to snatch the title of best film from all of them. And not only that. It has also lifted the statuette for best fight for the fight between Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers) and Ghostface. And Ortega did even better, because beyond his participation in Scream VI, he has managed to win the award for best performance in a series for Wednesday.

Other big winners of the night were Elizabeth Olsen for Best Villain in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Tom Cruise for Best Actor in a Motion Picture for Top Gun 2. Their celebratory video was one of the most epic that could be seen at the gala:
