The Writer’s Guild of America’s screenwriters’ strike continues to grow, and more and more productions are suffering as victims of this general stoppage of Hollywood writers. Called on May 1, the strike has already caused the delay of the Game of Thrones spin-off and the new season of Severance. And now another even more striking victim has arrived: The Last of Us.

After expelling David Simon, the creator of The Wire who had been working for HBO for 25 years, the platform has had to make another tough decision: to pause production of the second season of The Last of Us. Although work on it began at the end of the first season, the strike has forced the screenwriters, led by Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, to cease their work until the situation is clarified.

What will be the consequences of the screenwriters’ strike?

The portal Variety has been who has collected the information about it, and ensures that the casting for the roles of the second season was in operation until this week, but after the strike have also been paralyzed. Thus, we will have to wait a little longer to hear about the series.

It is important to note that the last screenwriters’ strike of this caliber, held for four months between 2007 and 2008, cost the state of California more than $2 billion, and also led to the completion of such horrendous projects as X-Men Origins: Wolverine or the second season of Heroes.

That is why it is essential to end the strike as soon as possible: both for the rights of the screenwriters and to ensure that fictions of the stature of The Last of Us are not affected. Certainly, after the wonderful first season, any imbalance in this regard could cloud the series.

HBO’s plan is to begin shooting early next year in Vancouver, Canada. However, if the writers’ strike continues, the scripts may not arrive until months later and the entire production may have to be delayed significantly.
