The second season of The Last of Us, HBO’s acclaimed adaptation of the popular Naughty Dog video game, has just premiered on Max. The series has managed to capture the audience’s attention and has received very positive reviews since its debut, positioning it as one of the best video game adaptations to television. However, following its premiere, some questions have arisen regarding the fidelity with which it adapts the video game.
Improvements to adapt to the format or betrayal of the video game?
Despite its success, the series has faced criticism for its approach of replicating the original material instead of exploring new narratives. While many viewers enjoyed the impressive production and character development in the first season, there were also voices arguing that the adaptation could benefit from a more innovative approach. One of the interesting creative decisions in this new season is the inclusion of Catherine O’Hara, who will play Gail, an original character not present in the video game.
Gail is an unconventional therapist who will attend to Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, in Jackson, Wyoming, five years after the events of the first season. With unique working methods that include accepting payments in marijuana and consuming alcohol during sessions, Gail’s introduction promises to delve into mental health issues and the consequences of Joel’s past decisions. However, this new character has also generated divided opinions among fans, who wonder if the series should stray from the original material.
While the series has made an effort to stay true to the cinematics of the video game, some argue that the best pieces of the narrative are those that dare to diverge from the original story, as evidenced in the third chapter of the first season. As we approach the premiere of the second season, interest continues to grow, encouraging new viewers to explore the raw and emotional universe of The Last of Us.
