On November 10th, the new version of the PlayStation 5 was launched in the United States, dubbed by the community as “PS5 Slim” due to being a smaller and more compact console compared to the initial PS5 (which is, to say the least, quite sizable). Despite several months remaining until its launch in the rest of the world, many have already had the chance to test it out and uncover some of its peculiarities.
Besides the size reduction, which in itself would be a major draw for many users, the new PS5 Slim includes a very striking feature: the ability to extract and insert the disc drive. Both the old version of the PlayStation 5 and the new one have been released in two models: one with a disc drive and another without it (digital), but the PS5 Slim allows for the seamless removal and insertion of a disc drive.
While we mentioned earlier that both models of the new PS5 Slim will require an internet connection to install a disc drive for the first time, this week we’ve learned a bit more about how this process will work, including the possibility of swapping a disc drive with another PS5 Slim.
In one of their recent videos, the YouTube channel Mystic delves into analyzing the functionality of the new version of the PlayStation 5, checking, among other things, whether a disc drive can be used in a console after being registered in another one or if, conversely, it would be “locked” and usable only on that specific console.
According to the video, the disc drives of the new PS5 Slim would work like any other PS5 peripheral. If one is registered on a console, it could later be registered without any issues on another console, without any form of lock or hindrance. However, the registration process will require connection to Sony’s servers once again, hence an internet connection is necessary for this short process.
