OpenAI has launched the Batch API, an innovative solution aimed at optimizing efficiency in handling asynchronous tasks, offering developers a new way to interact with the company’s machine learning models. This new API promises significant cost reductions, higher speed limits, and a more agile workflow.
The new OpenAI API is compatible with a wide range of the company’s AI models, including various iterations of GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, allowing developers to select the most suitable one for their needs, as well as submit batch requests by uploading a single file containing multiple tasks, which are processed asynchronously in the background without the need for real-time interaction. Results are delivered within 24 hours, making it easier to manage and predict workloads.
Among its main advantages are greater profitability (a 50% discount compared to other synchronous APIs), higher rate limits to process more tasks simultaneously, and file management capability, supporting JSONL formats and files up to 100 GB.

The Batch API from OpenAI provides transparency in processing times, allowing developers to track the status of their jobs. Although it offers numerous advantages, there are several considerations to keep in mind, such as the lack of compatibility with streaming, a fixed processing window of 24 hours, and non-zero data retention.
In a context where more and more companies integrate AI into their operations, tools like the new Batch API are immensely useful for meeting future demands. Although it has some drawbacks, this API represents a step forward in the processing of asynchronous tasks, allowing for massive task processing at a reduced cost and with greater efficiency.
