The launch of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered has generated a mix of emotions in the gaming community. With a price of 50 euros, the standard edition of the game has been received with interest, although also with some reluctance due to its high price for an update of a 20-year-old RPG. However, those willing to spend a little more can opt for the deluxe edition, which for an additional 10 euros includes horse armor sets, new weapons, character armors, a digital art book, and the game’s soundtrack.
The special edition doesn’t improve much
Paradoxically, the horse armor, which in 2006 was mocked for its ridiculousness as post-launch content, now presents itself as an integral part of the standard experience. Its inclusion reflects how aesthetic microtransactions have normalized over the years, and how the concept of “horse armor” has shifted from being a symbol of the absurd to an element appreciated by some. Although criticisms of this practice have emerged on platforms like Reddit and Steam, most players seem to enjoy the return of this content, resulting in Oblivion Remastered quickly becoming one of the best-selling titles on Steam.
The acceptance of microtransactions, which were previously met with rejection, has evolved significantly over the last 20 years. The author of this analysis shares his personal experience, recalling how he once denied the purchase of horse armor on principle, but now observes without annoyance the course that the industry has taken. In fact, the resurgence of Oblivion Remastered has shown that, despite the criticism, interest and sales are strong, consolidating the victory of horse armor in the video game ecosystem.
