Who doesn’t feel like racing? And it’s even better if the races are accompanied by a striking setting. Punk Runner is a promising racing video game created by independent developer Max Parata, who has been working on this project since 2019. The title is presented as a homage to Need for Speed Underground 2 and other classics of the genre, integrating innovative elements inspired by the vibrant Japanese car culture.

Neons and Flying Cars. The Fantasy of Your 12-Year-Old Self
This game seeks to combine the futuristic and neon environment of Cyberpunk 2077 with the iconic early 2000s style of Need for Speed, resulting in a visual experience that evokes the aesthetics of movies like The Fifth Element. According to Parata, the title not only revitalizes vehicle customization but also introduces a multiplayer challenge initiation system that allows players to compete against anyone, anytime, and anywhere within an open world.
A distinctive aspect of Punk Runner is the flying car mechanics, which operate with thrusters instead of wheels. Unlike other games where aerial vehicles behave like helicopters or drones, here the cars maintain a realistic driving feel, which could offer a new dimension to the racing genre.
For those interested, a demo of the game is now available for free download on itch.io, as well as a mini gameplay video on YouTube, published by the channel Alpha Beta Gamer. However, to date, no information has been revealed about the official release of the game or the platforms on which it will be available. This suggests that it may take some time before players can fully experience Punk Runner, considering the magnitude of the project for a solo developer.
