Streaming platforms are starting the year 2024 with very strong bets. Netflix has released a series about the Taiwanese Mafia starring Michelle Yeoh, Amazon Prime Video has added to its catalog a movie in the purest Black Mirror style and now Disney Plus has just released a series about Artificial Intelligence that has great potential.
The title of the miniseries is Promoción 09 (Class of 09), it has eight episodes and it is a self-contained plot that doesn’t seem to have a second season. Nevertheless, it is a very interesting series with touches of science fiction that makes us reflect on the near future of society and how AI can change everything.
AI becomes a threat again, but more real than ever
Told through three different time periods, the series focuses on a group of FBI agents struggling to adapt to the enormous changes in the US criminal justice system altered by Artificial Intelligence. With an interesting blend of thriller, science fiction, and touches of comedy, it tells the story of a graduating class at Quantico in 2009 who face immense changes in a judicial system that seemed unalterable until AI arrived.
Promotion 09 is starring Kate Mara, sister of Rooney Mara and protagonist of Fantastic Four or Shooter; Jake McDorman, known for Limitless and Mrs. Davis – another interesting proposal about AI -; Brooke Smith, from The Silence of the Lambs; and Raúl Castillo. In addition, behind the fiction is Tom Rob Smith, a novelist and screenwriter known for Child 44. Without a doubt, it is a new product of the times that makes it very clear that AI can not only be applied to new audiovisual formulas, but is the precursor of many stories of this type.
