Microsoft has discovered that some Ubisoft games crash after users install the Windows 11 24H2 update. Among the affected games are well-known titles such as Assassin’s Creed, Star Wars Outlaws, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
Once the major fall 2024 update is installed, these games crash as soon as they start, freeze shortly after, or have audio issues. In some games, a black screen appears after a few minutes.
Users have raised this issue in various places, such as on Reddit and in Microsoft’s forums. An affected user wrote:
“I recently updated to version 24H2. I tried to play Star Wars Outlaws and it was unplayable. Before the update, I had no issues playing on ultra settings. After the 24H2 update, loading the game was horrible, like having a PC from the 90s, massive stuttering and long load times. I decided to revert to 23H2. Now everything is back to normal. What could be the problem?”
These are the games that are broken on Windows 11
According to BleepingComputer, Microsoft has confirmed issues with certain Ubisoft games after updating to Windows 11 24H2. You can find Microsoft’s corresponding statement here, which specifically mentions these games:
- Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
- Assassin’s Creed Origins
- Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
- Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora
- Star Wars Outlaws
In response, Microsoft has temporarily blocked the automatic update to Windows 11 24H2 on computers that have one or more of these games installed. Microsoft also strongly advises against the manual installation of Windows 11 24H2 for users with these games.
Microsoft and Ubisoft are currently working on a solution to the problem. Although Ubisoft has released a hotfix for Star Wars Outlaws, there might be performance issues after installing it.
