If you enjoy sci-fi movies then 2023 is the year for you. We already saw some great releases leading up to 2023 with highly anticipated titles like Avatar: The Way of Water, They Cloned Tyrone, and Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. However, that was just the tip of the iceberg for the science fiction genre. In 2023 there is an exciting lineup of new sci-fi movies, remakes, and sequels to get fans of the genre excited.
In this article, we’ll be taking a look into some of the most anticipated sci-fi releases for 2023.
Dune: Part Two
Dune: Part Two is the next movie in the franchise based on the books by Frank Herbert. The first movie was released back in 2021, and despite being released during a difficult period it was still a big box office hit. The National Board of Review and American Film Institute named it one of the top 10 movie releases of 2021.
The second installment returns with a powerful cast that includes the return of Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Stellan Skarsgård, and Dave Bautista. We’ll also be seeing a few new additions that include Florence Pugh and Austin Butler. If you’re as excited as we are for Dune: Part Two you’re in for a bit of a wait as it’s scheduled to hit theaters on November, 3rd 2023.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes might seem like a mouthful, but this highly anticipated dystopian action adventure is based on the books by Suzanne Collins. This movie serves as a prequel to The Hunger Games trilogy released in 2012. This movie is set 64 years before the original and follows a teenage version of Coriolanus Snow, the future President of Panem and the main villain of the original movies. We follow him as he trains a tribute for the 10th Hunger Games. This stage prepares him for his future authoritarian rule.
When it comes to casting, we’re expected to see Tom Blythe as a young President Snow. Other cast members are said to include Rachel Zegler, Hunter Schafer, Jason Schwartzman, Burn Gorman, Peter Dinklage, and Viola Davis. Fans of the original Hunger Games or anyone that enjoys dystopian settings can enjoy this prequel in theaters on November 17, 2023.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is the eighth live-action movie based on the Transformers toy line. This installment is heavily influenced by the Beast Wars storyline and is a sequel to Bumblebee which was released in 2018. This movie continues to follow Optimus Prime’s story in 1994 in Brooklyn when he first made a bond with the planet.
Transformers: Rise of Beasts is directed by Steven Caple Jr. with Peter Cullen lending his voice once more to the character of Optimus Prime. The rest of the cast consists of Michelle Yeoh, Pete Davidson, Ron Perlman, and Anthony Ramos. If you’re a fan of the Transformers franchise, you can catch this newest sci-fi installment being released in the US on June 9th, 2023.

Spaceman
Spaceman is a highly anticipated sci-fi drama directed by Johan Renck and is based on the novel ‘Spaceman of Bohemia’ by Jaroslav Kalfař. The story follows a young man, Jakub Procházka, who was abandoned as a boy and raised by his grandparents in the Czech countryside. Despite the odds, he beats all expectations and becomes the country’s first astronaut.
This movie has an A-list cast lined up. We’ll see Adam Sandler portraying Jakub Procházka, and he is joined by Carey Mulligan, Paul Dano, Kunal Nayyar, Isabella Rossellini, and Sinéad Phelps. Although there’s no official release date yet, Spaceman is expected to release on Netflix in the fall of 2023.

65
65 is a sci-fi movie produced by Sam Raimi and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. The movie was first announced back in 2020 but is finally scheduled for release. The story follows an astronaut that crash lands on a mysterious planet (actually earth 65 million years ago). Now he has to traverse the treacherous terrain and prehistoric animals while also learning that he’s not alone.
Adam Driver will be taking the lead and we’re very excited to see him portraying the character Mills. He’s joined by Ariana Greenblat, Chloe Coleman, and Alexandra Shipp. Despite the many delays since 65 was announced, the movie will be released on March 17th, 2023.

The Mothership
The Mothership is a sci-fi thriller adventure directed by Matthew Charman. It follows the story of a mother, Sara Morse, whose husband disappeared a year ago. However, she and her children set out to discover more about his disappearance and soon find a mysterious object beneath their remote home.
Halle Berry takes on the lead role of Sara Morse. The amazing actress is joined by Molly Parker, Omari Hardwick, Sydney Lemmon, Paul Guilfoyle, and John Ortiz. At the moment there’s still no official release date, but the movie is expected to be released on Netflix sometime in 2023.

The Pod Generation
The Pod Generation is an exciting sci-fi romance directed by Sophie Barthes. The movie is set in the near future where AI is all the craze and anything natural is fading into obscurity. In the movie, we follow a New York couple, Rachel and Alvy, as they prepare to start a family using new technology.
The Pod Generation sees Amelia Clarke and Chiwetel Ejiofor in the main roles of Rachel and Alvy. They are joined by Kathryn Hunter, Vinette Robinson, Rosalie Craig, Jean-Marc Barr, Rita Bernard-Shaw, and Megan Maczko. The Pod Generation will be released on January 19th, 2023.
