Volkswagen’s U.S. self-driving arm, Volkswagen ADMT (Autonomous Driving Mobility & Transport), is set to embark on a groundbreaking venture by partnering with Uber to deploy thousands of autonomous ID.
Buzz vans across the United States over the next decade. The initiative, which begins in Los Angeles, marks a significant step forward in the robotaxi race, with test operations slated to commence later this year and commercial rides expected to launch in 2026.
Volkswagen Becomes The First Automaker With Large-Scale Production Plans
During the initial phases of testing and launch, human operators will be present in the vans to ensure safety and fine-tune the technology before full autonomy is implemented.
Each phase will progress only after receiving necessary approvals from regulators, a move designed to maintain safety and compliance standards in the burgeoning autonomous vehicle market.
Volkswagen’s mobility brand, MOIA, will provide both the ID. Buzz vehicles and the advanced autonomous driving software that will run on Uber’s platform. This full-stack approach highlights Volkswagen’s commitment to integrating self-driving electric vehicles into the ride-hailing ecosystem, setting it apart from traditional car manufacturers who have yet to embrace this level of innovation.
CEO Christian Senger emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Volkswagen is not just a car manufacturer – we are shaping the future of mobility, and our collaboration with Uber accelerates that vision.” Notably, in March 2024, Volkswagen became the first automaker to develop a Level 4 autonomous driving service vehicle ready for large-scale production, capable of navigating most driving situations independently in designated urban areas.
As the landscape of urban mobility continues to evolve, Volkswagen and Uber’s partnership signifies a transformative shift towards the mainstream acceptance of autonomous ride-hailing services, paving the way for a new era in transportation technology.
