The latest Apple operating systems are now available to all users, thanks to the release of the public betas of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, tvOS 18, watchOS 11, and macOS Sequoia. This version allows us, provided we have a compatible device, to test the new features before their official release in autumn. Are you ready for all the new functions?
iOS 18 and iPadOS 18: a revolution in customization and interaction
iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 bring important changes to the way we interact with our iPhones and iPads. One of the most notable features is the extensive customization of the home screen. Now we can freely arrange icons and widgets, leaving empty spaces and selecting the color of the icons and widgets, with a new dark mode option for the icons that adds an elegant and consistent touch to the entire interface.
The Control Center has also been completely redesigned, allowing you to rearrange any control and even add third-party controls. This means that external applications can be integrated more deeply into the system. Additionally, the lock screen becomes more customizable with the ability to change the quick controls to those we consider.
The changes continue, from new RCS support in the Messages app to a complete redesign of the Photos app. The new Passwords app, new features for custom routes in Maps, changes for AirPods, improvements to Notes and the Journal app, and much more privacy, for example by being able to choose which contacts we share with certain apps.
macOS Sequoia: Improving from continuity to security
On the other hand, macOS Sequoia comes with new features designed to improve productivity and security. One of the most innovative features is “iPhone Mirroring,” which allows us to control our iPhone directly from the Mac, as long as we are outside of Europe. Receiving iPhone notifications and controlling a remote screen through SharePlay are also some of the new features.
Improvements in window management, in FaceTime thanks to Presenter preview or background replacement, news in Safari, more customization in Messages and Maps, real-time transcriptions in Notes, or integration between Calendar and Reminders are also some of the new features.
Security has also been strengthened in macOS Sequoia with the arrival of better control over our contacts, changes in System Preferences, and a dedicated password application that makes it easier to access and manage login credentials and Wi-Fi passwords.
How to install these betas?
To install the iOS 18 or macOS Sequoia public beta, you must sign up for Apple’s public beta program via its website. It is important to remember that, as these are beta versions, they may contain bugs, so Apple recommends caution, especially on devices used daily.
Having clear that we can go back to iOS 17 if we have installed the iOS 18 beta, the public betas of the operating system for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Watch are an excellent way to test the new features before they are officially released. It is also a way to participate in its development, as beta testers can report any errors they find and even make suggestions on how certain changes should be implemented. All the while we wait for the official release in September.
