Today we woke up with big news for Star Wars fans: Disney Plus has canceled The Acolyte after one season, so we won’t see the continuation of this highly anticipated fiction that ended up being a resounding failure. But what exactly happened for the next season not to be given the green light? Certainly, there are many reasons why this has happened.

The Acolyte is a new stumble in a declining universe
Interestingly, when The Acolyte premiered, it did so with spectacular numbers, being the most watched fiction on Disney Plus during its first weeks. But already in its premiere, we came face to face with reality: despite the fact that it was clear that they had confidence in it, it didn’t have a hint of the quality they had promised us.
That is why, first of all, everything seems to indicate that it is a matter of expectations. The series has cost 180 million dollars, being one of the highest productions ever seen on television, and also among the most expensive in the entire Star Wars universe. But the budget was useless when the story seemed like a rehash of everything we had already seen, the characters lacked charisma everywhere, and furthermore, the photography was flat and monotonous. Simply put, it did not live up to what was promised.

These expectations are added to the fact that it is a series that covers a never-before-seen moment in Star Wars in film or television, and that it was also highly anticipated by fans. The lack of care when narrating events that people were eagerly awaiting has ultimately caused the audience to not be able to connect with it.
Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg. The show was also labeled as ‘woke’ by having poorly-written women in positions never seen before in Star Wars, as well as LGBTQ+ relationships. But to be honest, the review bombing would have been nothing if the quality of the show and story had been up to par.

Anyway, this is another new setback that adds to the list of failures in a universe that, a few years ago, no one would have imagined would be in such a bad moment. Will Disney be able to redirect the path of the Star Wars universe… or will it die along the way? Everything seems to indicate that we will know very soon.
