If you’re one of those who keeps all your WhatsApp conversations and struggle every time you change your phone or it gets damaged, we bring you news that will give you years of life. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has announced a new chat transfer feature that will allow you to move your conversations from one device to another with just a QR code scan.

This new method will only require your old phone to still be operational, in order to display the QR code that you will need to scan with your new phone. Zuckerberg’s announcement also emphasizes the security of the transferred data when using this feature: “The data is only shared between your two devices, and is fully encrypted during the transfer.”

Until now, those who wanted to transfer their WhatsApp conversations from one device to another had to go through the tedious process of uploading a backup of the chats from the old phone to cloud storage (Google Drive or iCloud, depending on the mobile operating system), and then downloading it to the new phone. Aside from being a much slower process than the new one, it can be problematic if your cloud storage is full (preventing you from making the backup).

Currently, this feature will only work between devices with the same operating system (i.e., from iOS to iOS or from Android to Android), although WhatsApp already allows you to transfer data between different operating systems using alternative methods. The exact release date of this new feature is unknown.

WhatsApp has been on a roll lately, releasing some exciting features for its users. Recently, they have introduced a function to mute calls from unknown numbers, another one that allows you to edit your messages (in case you make a mistake while typing), and Channels, which are “inspired” by the popular feature in Telegram.
