Yesterday we had such negative news for Xbox Series S customers, that we feared the worst. Now, Phil Spencer has wanted to give a message of tranquility: the hardware that exists now is not touched, there will be no mid-gen console.
Microsoft gaming chief Phil Spencer has stated that there are no plans for a mid-generation Xbox X|S Series update, confirming that the company remains focused on current hardware.
During an interview with IGN at Gamescom 2023, Spencer was asked if there is any news about a mid-generation refresh for the current generation of consoles, to which he replied simply, “No. The team is focused on increasing Xbox Series S storage.”
There will not be a mid-generation Xbox Y Series
The same topic was addressed in another interview with Eurogamer, and Spencer reiterated his statements saying that he didn’t see a reason for mid-gen revamps right now, noting that it can cause problems for developers and the platforms they are targeting.
“I definitely believe that when we do hardware, we should have a rationale that is demonstrably different from what was there before,” Spencer said.
“I think what happens to us as an industry – and other people with affinities to other platforms are going to argue with me about this – but sometimes you feel really good about the performance of the console at the beginning of the generation,” he continued.
Goodbye to hundreds of Xbox 360 games
Microsoft recently announced that the Xbox 360 digital store will close in July 2024, meaning that a lot of games that don’t have a new home on current-gen consoles or PC could be lost forever.
When asked about his stance on game preservation, Spencer said he would “love to find solutions,” but there are no plans at the moment.
