WHAT’S THE MEANING?

A simulation video game is an umbrella term for the bigger category of video-games that are designed and developed to closely ‘simulate’ real world activities. In general, players in simulation games are free to control everything found in the environment. These seemingly real-world activities are all part of the process which game developers want the players to experience.

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that after the banning of the controversial school-shooting simulation game in May 2018, the Steam video game store has changed its content policy to ‘allow everything’, unless a game is really illegal? The game Active Shooter made a history for sparking outrage from the parents of the victims of the Parkland shooting incident. An article on The Independent confirmed that 200, 000 signatures have successfully taken down the game. However, shortly after the incident, Valve Corporation, the parent company of the games' distributor, has recently announced that it would now “allow everything” on the Steam Store.

Interestingly, the firm stand of Valve makes the Steam Store the first ever virtual reality platform to offer adult content because the new policy will surely pave the way for games that are considered to be ‘pornographic’ and ‘inappropriate’. An article on BBC says that Valve believes that this move gives the game developers the freedom to express their creativity through “tasteful and earnest exploration of sexuality.” In conclusion, the parent company takes its firm stand in saying that the games that will be allowed onto the store will not reflect the Valve’s values but will rather manifest a support to everyone’s right to create and consume the content they think they deserve and accept.
