If you’re an Apple fan or follower, you probably know that it uses Broadcom for its current chipset, which includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It looks like the media and phone giant wants to become more independent and enhance its services. Based on the latest reports, it now wants to include cellular functionality in the ‘superchip’ as an all-in-one solution.
Apple has already had a hand in some custom chips in the past. Broadcom helped them with one of the latest ones, which is a chip for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity collectively. However, the company wants to take it a step further, adding cellular to the equation. The problem is that it’s incredibly complicated to do so, so it will mark a milestone in the industry for the business.

There also seems to be some advancement in making a cellular modem that belongs to Apple. Qualcomm currently provides the services, and it even estimates that earnings will increase by 2024. While the company feels it will provide the majority of iPhone 5G modems, Apple is taking steps toward its own plans. Still, Qualcomm doesn’t feel concerned that it will affect much of its business by 2025.
Being an Android user, I marvel at how much work Apple is putting into its iPhones and chips. I’ve often been told to switch to the competitor, but I’ve been so used to Android, I don’t know how I would feel about the change. The main discontent I’ve had with my Huawei P Smart 2021 is that it doesn’t connect to Google Play services. I wonder if Apple users ever had this issue.
In any event, it looks like it may take some time for Apple to construct this superchip, as I call it. Many have tried, but only succeeded in combining the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionality. Time will tell.
