BBM may be struggling to catch up to messaging apps like WhatsApp and Snapchat but it now offers something other apps don’t: truly secure messaging. BlackBerry now offers encrypted messaging with BBM Protected.
Instead of encrypting a single chat with a single encryption key, BBM Protected encrypts every message. This makes it difficult for hackers to decrypt an entire conversation. If someone does manage to decrypt a message, they won’t have context for that message.
Unfortunately, BBM Protected is only available to enterprise users. For now, the feature is only available on devices running BlackBerry 6.0 or later. BlackBerry 10 is also supported. BlackBerry promises to bring the feature to Android and iOS later this year.
