Facebook fixes iOS app bug to reduce crashes by 50%

It’s probably fair to say that iOS users are not used to apps crashing, but the official Facebook app has been pretty unreliable lately. Finally, Facebook engineers have announced that they’ve found and fixed a bug which will reduce crashing by 50%.

The blog post, entitled ‘Debugging file corruption on iOS’ explains the difficulties engineers have in finding and fixing bugs in an app that has code contributions from hundreds of developers. It’s a pretty dense and technical article, but the conclusion is simple. Although identifying a bug can take a long time, fixing it is much faster, and in this case only took a matter of hours.

Facebook’s iOS app has a monthly update cycle, with the latest one arriving yesterday, on August 12th. Sometimes updates include new features, but often they just address bugs, as with this August update.
