This week, the responsible studio for developing Battlefield 2042, known by its concise name DICE, announced that season 7 of Battlefield 2042 was the last one to come to the game. In other words, the journey has ended here.

Battlefield 2042 was released on November 12, 2021 and its arrival to the markets was a disaster. One of the worst launches in the history of video games, along with Cyberpunk 2077 and some other title that we surely forgot (the mind is capricious for these things).

The reality is that two and a half years have passed since the game was launched and now DICE says they have finished dedicating effort and team to improve and add new content. That’s why now is the best time to look back and answer two questions: has it been a good game or not?, will there be a new Battlefield installment? Let’s get to it.

Has Battlefield 2042 been a disaster and the worst game in the saga?

Now we can finally say whether the game has been a success, a disaster, something mediocre, or something else. And, as a veteran player of the saga with over 3,000 hours played in all versions, I can assure you that Battlefield 2042 is a good game.

In addition, it is a worthy Battlefield, which is synonymous with greatness. It is not in vain that we are talking about the most respected shooting game franchise in the industry along with Call of Duty. Therefore, the pressure is always very high.

Battlefield 2042 es, para mí, el juego que más ha evolucionado y mejorado a lo largo de la historia. En el panorama actual de los videojuegos, solo No Man’s Sky ha logrado alcanzar (e incluso superar) esta increíble progresión.

At the moment, Battlefield 2042 is a great shooting game, for me the best in the entire multiplayer genre right now.

The question is: would it enter the podium of the best BF in history? Well, unfortunately not. Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, and Battlefield V are the top three. Although BF2042 may be remembered as one of the good ones (but not excellent).

Once the developers understood what the players wanted (recognizable elements from the saga such as real classes, rankings, on-screen information, maps with coverages, etc.) the game became something recognizable and very fun.

I don’t remember something so bad and poorly taken care of in a long time, but as soon as the Battle Pass started with Season 1, the game changed. For many, that day was supposed to be the game’s release date (6 months after the official launch). Interestingly, on that day, the build number in the menu was this: 1.00. Which makes it clear, for those of us who know about software, that everything before was just a beta.

Even at this moment, if you find it cheap, for 10 or 20 euros, you can buy it without hesitation because you will receive a game full of maps, players, weapons and a lot of action. I foresee that until the next Battlefield, BF2042 will have a fairly large community to play every day without any problem.

Will there be a new Battlefield release?

Good question. If we consider that EA keeps firing executives from DICE, one might think that the future is very bleak for the Battlefield franchise. However, there are reasons to believe otherwise.

The increase that Battlefield 2042 has had in the last year has been brutal, with peaks on Steam of over 100,000 players at once. Quite an achievement considering that in 2022 it barely had 1,000 connected players.

Later, critics and analysts have applauded each season and each effort, as they always went in the right direction. They promised 4 seasons and have given us, in return for nothing, 3 more seasons with new maps and weapons. That means that the team and those in charge wanted to leave us with a good taste in our mouths.

And finally, DICE has explained in their latest statement that they have incorporated a new team of developers (Motive Studio) to help them create new experiences and adventures within the Battlefield franchise. We don’t know if this means there will be a new serialized Battlefield. But it makes clear that DICE will continue developing games/experiences/content based on the Battlefield universe.

I don’t know if there will be a Battlefield 6 (for lack of a better name), but I want to believe there will be. The current team has learned in the best possible way: developing a game, improving it, and listening to the community.

At this moment they have received the best training, so the next Battlefield could be, at its launch, one of the best in history. I want to believe.
