Hazbin Hotel: What is it about?

Hazbin Hotel is an adult animated series created by Vivienne Medrano, also known as Vivziepop on social media. The series stands out for its distinctive dark humor and catchy songs, many of which have become viral on platforms like TikTok. Here we will follow the misadventures of Charlie Morningstar, the princess of Hell, who seeks to redeem condemned souls by turning her hotel into a rehabilitation place for demons.

The central concept of the series revolves around the idea that even in Hell, where sinners are sentenced to suffer for eternity, there is room for redemption. Charlie wants to make the Hazbin Hotel a place to “reeducate” sinners and give them a chance to enter Heaven.

But why this insistence on saving everyone? Here we need to provide some context: Lucifer and Lilith, Charlie’s parents, were the ones who devised Hell as a refuge for demons and sinners who couldn’t ascend to Heaven. To control the overpopulation of Hell, angels are sent every year to carry out an extermination. Charlie presents the Hazbin Hotel as a non-violent alternative for condemned souls to have the opportunity to repent and ascend to Heaven.

One of the aspects that stands out the most about Hazbin Hotel is its striking visual style. The character designs are vibrant and full of personality, with an aesthetic that combines gothic, punk, and retro elements. To accompany it, we also have many musical numbers and songs that will stick in your head.

In addition to the visual aspect, you will probably be drawn to the coarse and foul language of Hazbin Hotel. However, you will soon discover that Hazbin Hotel is much more than just profanity. Beneath the vulgarity and comedy, we will uncover a plot that deals with themes such as identity, forgiveness, and acceptance.

On the other hand, the cast of characters is undoubtedly the heart of Hazbin Hotel: extravagant, losers, addicts, violent… everything bad you can think of, they have it. However, not everything is terrible: as the series progresses, we also discover their past and traumas, which leads us to think that, maybe, there is a space for redemption after all. Angel Dust, the radio demon Alastor or Vaggie are just some of the characters that make Hazbin Hotel so special.

And we can’t overlook the music. Talking about Hazbin Hotel also means talking about its songs, because above all, we are dealing with a musical. All the songs have been composed by Sam Haft and Andrew Underberg, musicians with a great deal of experience. Haft is known for being part of the duo The Living Tombstone, while Underberg was nominated for an Emmy for his work on The J Team.

The beginnings of Hazbin Hotel

To go back to the beginnings of Hazbin Hotel, we have to go back a few years, specifically to 2018. One of the first musical sequences of the series, Inside of Every Demon is A Rainbow, was uploaded to YouTube in October 2018. Then, in 2019, the well-known pilot episode of Hazbin Hotel was released on Vivziepop’s channel. At the time of its release, the pilot was a hit in views and currently, it has already surpassed 100 million views.

The success of the project caught the attention of the company A24, responsible for distributing and producing major films and series such as Spring Breakers, Moonlight, and Everything Everywhere All at Once. In 2020, the company announced that it had acquired the rights to Hazbin Hotel to create a television series, which has finally premiered this year, 2024.

Just one month after the release of the pilot episode of Hazbin Hotel, Vivziepop presented a new project on her channel: a spin-off called Helluva Boss. This turned out to be another great success and to this day, it has accumulated over 60 million views on YouTube. Fortunately, you can watch Helluva Boss in its entirety on YouTube and completely for free.

Where can I watch Hazbin Hotel?

Hazbin Hotel is available to watch through Amazon Prime Video. It is the streaming platform for movies and series offered by Amazon along with its Amazon Prime membership. If you are subscribed to Amazon Prime, you will be able to access the Amazon Prime Video catalog. Nowadays, there are different options and prices depending on the service you choose:

  • Amazon Student: 2.49 euros per month or 24.95 euros per year.
  • Amazon Student: without ads: 4.48 euros per month.

In addition, watching Hazbin Hotel in its entirety won’t take you much time. The series consists of only eight episodes, with a duration of 25 minutes each. In Spain, the first episode aired on January 19, 2024. However, we advise you to first watch the pilot episode released on YouTube before starting the series on Amazon Prime Video.

Will there be a second season of Hazbin Hotel?

The short answer is yes. The first season of Hazbin Hotel has become one of the most-watched series on Prime Video and, as expected, it has been confirmed that there will be a second season.

Luckily for fans, everything indicates that it won’t take too long to come out. Medrano stated in Screen Rant that the first season took between a year and a half and two years to produce, so he expects this second season to take a similar amount of time. Although there are no confirmed dates of any kind, we already know that the wait won’t be as long as the time between the pilot episode and the release of the series (5 years).
