Less than a week before Apple’s Wonderlust event, where the release of the iPhone 15 is expected, speculations about its price are once again making headlines. A new rumor from DigiTimes suggests that the Pro models of the iPhone 15 will experience a “significant increase” in their cost. This information adds to what has already been suggested several times by Bloomberg and some analysts at Barclays.
While the exact price is still a mystery, the changes in design and features seem to justify this increase. We’ll have to see not only how it arrives in dollars in the United States but also how it translates into the local currencies of each country.
What justifies the price increase?
According to Luke Lin, senior analyst at DigiTimes Research, the price increase for the Pro models is primarily due to two factors: the change from stainless steel to titanium for the chassis material and the incorporation of a new periscope lens system in the camera. These advancements could make a significant difference in the quality and durability of the device, justifying, at least in part, the price increase.
Speculation suggests that the iPhone 15 Pro could have a starting price of $1,099, $100 more than its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro. In the case of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, it is rumored that it could cost up to $200 more than the previous model, bringing its starting price to $1,299. If these rumors turn out to be true, we would be talking about an increase of almost 20% in the case of the Pro Max model.
The truth is that in the past, we have seen how changes in certain technologies or key components of the device have been accompanied by changes in its price. In a time when the iPhone is a phone, a camera, a video camera, and hundreds of other things, all in one, a slightly higher price seems acceptable.
So much so that despite the price increase we are talking about, Apple is already preparing for increased demand for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which, according to predictions, will be the most popular model of this generation. The company is focusing its resources on increasing production of this particular model, which is reportedly accounting for the majority of orders in the supply chain.
Apple’s strategy seems clear: offer significant improvements in different versions, even if they result in a higher price for its Pro models. On the other hand, it’s worth noting that the iPhone X launched in 2017 marked the $999 price point that is still in effect today with the iPhone 14 Pro. In other words, Apple has not changed the iPhone’s price for six years despite improvements in materials, components, capacities, and specifications.
Finally, we must also consider the possibility that the base storage for all iPhones may increase with this generation. An increase that would practically equate, at least for the iPhone 15 Pro, to the rumored price increase.
At this moment, however, everything is still speculation and forecasts because the price of a device is one of the hardest things to predict. We can have leaks about cameras, colors, or other components that go through the supply chain, but prices are something that is decided and fixed internally within the company. Moreover, it can change rapidly, so we will have to wait and see if we actually see an increase this year, as it has been rumored in previous years without materializing. In a week, on September 12th, we will know all the details.
