The world of The Witcher has taken a new step with the release of The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, an anime film available on Netflix that focuses on Geralt of Rivia. In this new story, the monster hunter finds himself caught in a conflict that has lasted for centuries between humans and mermaids. This film, the second in the universe of The Witcher, presents a more direct connection to the live-action series than the previous one, Nightmare of the Wolf.
A movie that seeks to fill in the missing gaps
The plot is set at a key moment, between episodes 5 and 6 of the first season of the series. Specifically, it takes place in the year 1261, just before Geralt and Yennefer reunite in a crucial scenario for their relationship. In episode 5, titled Bottled Appetites, the bond between the two characters is established following a desire of Geralt, while episode 6, Rare Species, is set in 1262. This allows Sirens of the Deep to fill in some gaps in the narrative and provide more depth to the development of its characters.
The majority of the original cast returns to reprise their roles, with Anya Chalotra as Yennefer and Joey Batey as Jaskier standing out. However, the voice of Geralt is now portrayed by Doug Cockle, known for his work in video games, following Henry Cavill’s departure from the series. This film also incorporates an important nod that connects to the events of the next episode of the series, mentioning the fate of Jaskier, who expresses his desire to distance himself from Yennefer.
The movie is designed to complement the narrative of the The Witcher universe and is a canon element within the series. For those seeking more context and development in the relationship between Geralt and Yennefer, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is an essential addition, and it is now available for viewing on Netflix.
