Rockstar Games could change its approach with PC and surprise us with GTA

Rockstar Games has historically been known for its rigid approach to video game releases, especially in its most renowned franchises: Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. Since the release of GTA IV, the company has followed a pattern of first launching console versions, leaving PC players waiting between a year and a year and a half to access the corresponding versions. This has been the case with iconic titles like GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, and even the first Red Dead Redemption never saw the light on PC.

However, the landscape of the video game market is changing, and the recent statements from Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take Two, have highlighted the growing importance of the PC market. According to Zelnick, “we have seen that PC has become a much more important part of what used to be a console business”. This evolution is leading Rockstar to reconsider its release strategy, suggesting that the future could include simultaneous releases of versions for PC and console.

With the recent announcement of the trailer for GTA 6, the first versions will still be for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but there are indications that Rockstar is considering changes for future releases. It is speculated that, for GTA 7, the company could implement this new approach of simultaneous releases. The Civilization series, which recently launched Civilization 7 simultaneously on various platforms, could be serving as a model for this strategy.

However, PC fans will have to wait a little longer for GTA 6. Although changes are being made to Rockstar’s release policy, PC users will need to be patient, at least until the next installment of this iconic franchise is available in stores at the end of 2024.
