Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan‘s latest film, has been “the bomb.” The movie, which depicts the development of the first atomic bomb from the perspective of its creator, J. Robert Oppenheimer, has earned a remarkable 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing Greta Gerwig‘s new film, Barbie (90% rating).
While Barbie nearly doubles Oppenheimer’s box office figures with $470 million worldwide, Nolan’s movie remains a blockbuster, grossing $238 million globally. However, despite its success in theaters, many are wondering when Oppenheimer will premiere on Netflix or other streaming platforms.
A much more complex issue than many believe. At the moment, the date and platforms for Oppenheimer’s streaming release remain unknown.
Universal Pictures is responsible for distributing Oppenheimer worldwide and also owns the streaming platform Peacock. Although Peacock is not available in Spain, its catalog can be accessed through the SkyShowtime platform, which arrived in our country at the end of February. These two platforms would be the most likely options for the streaming premiere of Oppenheimer.
Another major contender to premiere Oppenheimer is the popular streaming service Netflix, although it’s highly likely that, if it were the case, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the movie in the short term.
This is because Netflix and Universal signed an agreement in July 2021 to release Universal films on the platform four years after their theatrical release. Therefore, if Oppenheimer were to eventually come to Netflix, we wouldn’t see it until the summer of 2027.
Indeed, if Oppenheimer were to premiere on Peacock and SkyShowtime, we would still need to wait for its streaming release, but not as long as with the Netflix agreement. Universal typically waits for 45 days after a film’s theatrical release to debut it on streaming platforms. So, if all goes as expected, we could expect to see Oppenheimer on streaming platforms by mid-September of this year.
