Yesterday they announced it at the end of a press release that had as main claim the PS Plus games for September. Hence, many were not aware of it and others criticized the Japanese company for “trying to sneak” the information.
Well, Sony has announced that prices for subscriptions to its PlayStation Plus service will be increasing in a matter of days, with price hikes across all three tiers… and not just a little.
The increase was announced yesterday in an official blog post revealing September’s free games, hence why many people haven’t heard about it yet.
These are the new prices for PlayStation’s PS Plus
The price jump will affect all regions, though each will be affected differently, and will take effect from September 6, 2023, which is next week.
For quick reference, these are the current prices for the different PS Plus subscription levels for one year:
- PlayStation Plus Essential: $59.99 / £49.99 / €59.99 .
- PlayStation Plus Extra: $99.99 / £83.99 / €99.99
- PlayStation Plus Premium: $119.99 / £99.99 / €119.99
And these are the prices for the 12 months from September 6:
- PlayStation Plus Essential: $79.99 / £59.99 / €71.99
- PlayStation Plus Extra: $134.99 / £99.99 / €125.99
- PlayStation Plus Premium: $159.99 / £119.99 / €151.99
So, these are pretty significant changes, whichever way you look at it, as the prices of some levels increase to be almost impossible to pay for many players.
A 33% increase in prices… without giving anything in return
A complete recategorization of prices and services. Or, from a percentage perspective, this represents a 33% price increase in the US, and around 20% for those in the UK and Europe.
If you’re already a 12-month subscriber, you’re safe until November 6, 2023, but everyone else will be affected from September 6, whether it’s additional subscriptions, upgrades or downgrades.
Sony has confirmed that 12-month options will continue to represent better value for money.
Still, there has been no word on what additional benefits this huge increase in the cost of subscriptions will bring, despite SIE’s Director of Content Acquisition and Switches, saying that “This price adjustment will allow us to continue to offer high quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service.”
