If you have been playing on the computer this weekend, it is most likely that you did so through the Valve client called Steam. And we don’t say this because it is the most used store and platform in the PC world, we say it because this weekend it has once again broken user records.
As we mentioned, it has been another record-breaking weekend on Valve’s Steam. Yesterday at 14:00 UTC, Steam set a new concurrency record with 39.2 million users, of which more than 12 million were playing.
Valve’s platform continues to grow at an astonishing rate. In January, it reached 33.6 million users; the threshold of 34 million was broken at the beginning of March and was quickly surpassed by two new records (35 and 36 million).
The milestone of 37 million was reached in August, and the next day Steam surpassed 38 million concurrent online users. Of course, these new peaks usually occur whenever major games are released, which drives users to engage with the platform.
And so it happened this weekend with Path of Exile 2, from the developer Grinding Gear, and Marvel Rivals, from NetEase. Both games have been a complete success.
Number of players on Steam
The sequel to the 2013 action RPG was released in early access last Friday, December 6, and is achieving astonishing figures for a premium game (this early access phase is paid, while the full release will be free), with a peak of players on Steam recorded at 578,000 about fourteen hours ago.
From Marvel Rivals, that Overwatch that came to resurrect the Hero Shooter genre after the downfall of Concord just a week after its launch, its numbers are also incredible, as we will see.
Marvel Rivals also had a strong launch, registering a peak of 444K concurrent users on Steam during the week and then breaking it with 480K users fourteen hours ago.
If we broaden the focus, the game is even more successful on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X, the team-based PvP superhero shooter has registered more than 10 million players in the first three days. Of course, it has the advantage of being a free-to-play where playing is free. What a great weekend for the video game industry.
