Tesla is facing significant challenges to its brand perception, as highlighted in the latest Electric Vehicle Intelligence Report (EVIR).
The survey, which evaluated the attitudes of 8,000 U.S. consumers towards electric vehicles (EVs), found Tesla to be the only EV manufacturer with a net negative brand perception, scoring -7%. While 39% of respondents reported a negative view of the brand, only 32% held a positive opinion.
More troubling for Tesla, nearly 38% of consumers indicated a more negative perception of the brand in the past six months, compared to just 16% who feel more positively.
Consumer Trust in Tesla Plummets as Skepticism Grows
Honda emerged as a surprising frontrunner in brand perception, even though it currently sells only one all-electric vehicle (BEV) in the U.S., the Prologue, developed in collaboration with General Motors.
Chevrolet also performed well, ranking third overall. In contrast, Tesla’s extensive brand recognition has been overshadowed by growing skepticism and negative associations linked to both the company and its CEO, Elon Musk.
The EVIR further underscores that Tesla’s problems extend beyond mere consumer opinion. The company has a notably high distrust score, with many potential customers stating they would “never consider” purchasing a Tesla. Additionally, Tesla ranked poorly in consumer trust and brand safety perceptions, placing second-to-last in safety and fourth from the bottom in family-friendliness.
Factors driving consumer interest in EVs largely remain relevant, focusing on savings on gasoline, environmental benefits, and the convenience of home charging. However, misconceptions about EV range persist as a primary concern for many potential buyers. Despite the growing availability of high-range EVs, a significant number of consumers continue to express doubts, indicating a gap in consumer knowledge that the industry needs to address.
As CEO Elon Musk’s controversial statements and decisions continue to impact public perception, the future of Tesla may hinge on its ability to restore trust and improve its brand image in an increasingly competitive EV market.
