The Tesla Powerwall, the market leader in home battery packs, is witnessing a notable decline in its popularity as consumer preferences shift and brand sentiment takes a hit.
Recent data from EnergySage reveals that the percentage of homeowners opting for the Powerwall in their solar quotes has dropped from 73% to 64% in just the first quarter of 2025.
This decrease coincides with a rise in negative sentiment towards Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk, particularly following various political statements and controversies.
Tesla Powerwall’s Popularity Declines Amid Consumer Shift and Negative Sentiment
Although Tesla remains a top choice among solar installers in Texas, with Powerwalls still the most requested battery system, competitors are beginning to gain ground.
Renu Energy Solutions has reported a significant uptick in requests for alternatives, particularly the Franklin aPower 2, which boasts similar specifications to the Powerwall 3 but offers slightly different capacities and warranties.
Nicholas Boles, the Solar Energy Advisor Manager at Renu, indicated that his most recent sales have all been for Franklin batteries, highlighting a clear shift in consumer interest.
Furthermore, a survey revealed that 68% of homeowners sought out alternatives to the Powerwall, and 13.5% expressed unfavorable opinions about Tesla or Musk during the quote process.
This sentiment is further exacerbated by homeowners publicly voicing their concerns over Musk’s political affiliations and opting to support other brands instead. One customer even stated, “Although we have a Tesla Powerwall and love it, we are outraged at Musk’s politics, so we don’t wish to send him more money”.
Despite these challenges, the ongoing growth of the home solar market could mean that the Powerwall will maintain a solid market presence. With increasing electricity rates pushing homeowners toward solar energy solutions, Tesla may still enjoy significant demand for its battery systems, even as competition emerges.
