The zombie film genre reached its peak during the 2000s, when franchises like Resident Evil opened the door to all kinds of reinterpretations such as the magnificent Dawn of the Dead or 28 Days Later. However, in Asia this phenomenon arrived somewhat distanced, and the greatest gems that have emerged came a little later.
Among all the great Asian zombie movies and series you can watch, there is one that stands out from the rest by far: Train to Busan. Directed by Yeon Sang-ho and released in 2016, it has been acclaimed by both critics and audiences alike since it came out, and now it is available on the streaming platform Amazon Prime Video.
A cursed journey
Train to Busan follows the story of Seok-woo (Gon Yoo), a busy investment fund manager who decides to take his daughter Su-an to visit her mother in the city of Busan. What starts as an ordinary train journey quickly turns into a desperate fight for survival when a viral outbreak transforms the passengers into ferocious zombies.
As the train moves towards Busan, the few survivors on board must not only face the zombies, but also the double standards of each of the humans and their own selfishness. Only by working together can they survive a journey that seems cursed.

In fact, the best thing about Train to Busan is its focus on the characters. The film doesn’t just present zombies as a monolithic threat, but explores human reactions in extreme situations. Each character, from the selfish businessman to the heroic working-class worker, is meticulously developed, making you feel truly connected to their fate.
But, of course, what structures the film and turns it into an instant classic is its structure by carriages. Each new location is a new threat, and on a train that never stops moving, anything can happen without any possible escape.
