It is clear that the Monsterverse is in a very sweet moment. Although not everyone was sure when Legendary Pictures announced a universe based on two monstrous icons such as King Kong and Godzilla, as movies have been released it has become clear that it is the best path they could have taken.
Now, with Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire, the stakes have been doubled compared to previous films, and we are amazed to see how these two great monsters team up to fight even worse threats. Under the masterful direction of Adam Wingerd and with a stellar cast led by Rebecca Hall, the movie has been a huge success. But what does its ending tell us?
A conclusion that makes the future of the Monsterverse clear
The plot of Godzilla and Kong culminates with King Kong exploring the Hollow Earth in search of other members of his species, only to encounter an unpleasant surprise: giant gorillas living under the rule of the tyrannical Scarred King in a volcanic region. This ruthless ape rules with the support of Shimo’s power, a colossus whose icy powers may have caused ice ages in prehistoric times.
Meanwhile, Godzilla faces his own challenges on the Earth’s surface, engaged in an endless war with other monsters and establishing his temporary residence in the Colosseum in Rome, a site that suits him quite well, to tell the truth.
The team formed by Dr. Andrews, her daughter Jia, Trapper, and Bernie, the conspiracy podcaster, discovers through the remnants of the Iwi village that the Scar King already tried to conquer the surface world in the past, and now he seeks to do it again with the portals created by the Iwi.
In the face of this threat, King Kong and Godzilla are forced to join forces to stop King Scar. The alliance is facilitated thanks to the telepathic powers of Jia, who manages to awaken Mothra, the Queen of the Monsters, mediator between the two colossal creatures.
The final battle takes place in Rio de Janeiro, where Godzilla and Mothra confront the simian tyrant while King Kong deprives him of his power source, the amulet that keeps Shimo enslaved. The liberation of Shimo results in the downfall of the Scar King, who is subsequently defeated by Kong.
With the neutralized threat, Jia decides to accompany her mother back to the surface, while King Kong returns to his home among the gorillas, establishing himself as their new leader alongside Shimo and Suko. Meanwhile, Godzilla finds a well-deserved rest in Rome, settling once again in the Colosseum. However, uncertainty persists regarding the possibility of a new threat that may require his intervention. In other words, new monsters are lurking.
