This morning we brought you the news: HBO Max will become Max and the new platform will be the real streaming bet of Warner Bros. Discovery group after the latest acquisitions.

The new application will bring new content and a total commitment to the most ambitious series, such as Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Rick and Morty or True Detective. Millions of euros are going to be spent on creating very expensive and highly anticipated products. And of course, they have to be paid for.

Max’s new prices are crazy

In this morning’s article we talked about this topic, as one of Max’s key points is that the tariffs are renewed and updated. Going from two payment models for a single tariff… to three new tariffs. These are:

  • Max Ad Lite | $9.99/month or $99.99/year: 2 simultaneous streams, 1080p resolution, no offline downloads, 5.1 surround sound quality.
  • Max Ad Free | $15.99/month or $149.99/year: 2 simultaneous streams, 1,080p resolution, 30 offline downloads, 5.1 surround sound quality.
  • Max Ultimate Ad Free | $19.99/month or $199.99/year: 4 simultaneous streams, up to 4K UHD resolution, 100 offline downloads, Dolby Atmos sound quality.

The issue is that these rates are much more expensive than the current rate of 8.99 euros per month or 69.99 euros per year. Right now it is one of the cheapest platforms on the market and with the change it will become the most expensive, even above Netflix in its 4K version.

So… what will happen to those who have now paid for the whole year or subscribed to the lifetime offer of HBO Max for 4.49 euros per month? Well, we don’t know, but it seems to be clear. Money rules.

They say in their press release that, “HBO Max subscribers will continue to have access to the features of their current plan for a minimum of six months after the launch of Max.”

In the absence of more concrete information, by 2024, which is when the service lands in Spain, subscribers who have paid for the year and those who took advantage of the half-price offer for life, will have 6 months of tariff validity. After that… they will have to pay the new prices, or so it seems.
