Everyone has heard that Baldur’s Gate 3 is an incredible game, one of those releases that happen every few years and that convinces both critics and the public at the same time. Undoubtedly, a role-playing game as complex and full of possibilities is not normal to enamor an entire sector, more focused on demanding action and adventure games than asking for complex titles.

The developer of Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studio, has confirmed that they will not make Baldur’s Gate 4, but they have other short and medium-term plans. What is not known is if there will never be a fourth game or if it is only for now.

“We are not going to introduce any new important narrative content in the story of Baldur’s Gate 3 or in its original characters and companions, nor are we going to make expansions or Baldur’s Gate 4,” wrote Larian Studio in a community update on Steam.

“We are working on two new projects and we couldn’t be more excited about what the future holds for us.” Larian promised more news about the new games “later on”, but did give a hint about the style.

“Know that, even though we focus on these new games, the sensibility that brought you Baldur’s Gate 3 is still alive in Larian’s castle. I don’t know if we will achieve it, but seeing our narrative, visual, and gameplay plans, I believe that what we are working on now will be our best work,” which is promising too much after a massive success.

Larian will not develop Baldur’s Gate 4… but another studio will

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been praised for its breadth, character development, puzzles, combat, fidelity to D&D, and of course, intimate relationships. It sold around 15 million copies, far exceeding the studio’s expectations, while also receiving widespread acclaim for the game throughout the past year.

Specifically, it won the Game of the Year awards at The Game Awards, The Steam Awards, the D.I.C.E. awards, the Streamer Awards, the Hugo Awards, and the GLAAD Media Awards, among others.

Director Swen Vincke previously revealed that the studio abandoned plans for the BG3 DLC and a sequel, partly due to the limitations imposed by the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition mechanics. However, there is no doubt that there will be a sequel to the Hasbro property. “We have done our job. It is a story with a beginning, a middle, and an end. So let’s pass the torch to another studio to pick up this incredible legacy,” the director added.
